Thyroid support

Probably the number one problem I see women presenting with in my practice is Underactive Thyroid – whether its been properly diagnosed or they are displaying symptoms of it.

Fatigue, sluggish digestion, bloating, digestive discomforts, brain fog, feeling cold and even infertility are all symptoms of an underactive thyroid.

The root cause of many thyroid issues is imbalanced diet, processed foods, leaky gut, exposure to chemicals, and too much inflammation.  Here is how:

  • Low thyroid levels are related to having too few antioxidants
  • High thyroid levels cause oxidation and inflammation
  • A leaky gut allows chemicals to enter the body that can drive inflammation and toxic burden.

Stressors, imbalanced diet, food intolerances, and lack of protective plants in our diet also create this inflammatory response and low antioxidant levels

From what I have researched, for good thyroid function, nutrition and stress reduction are ESSENTIAL.

On a nutritional level, there are some studies which suggest vitamin and mineral deficiency to be the root cause – particularly low levels of Vitamin D, Vitamin E, B12, Zinc, Selenium & Magnesium.

Dr Ridha Arem in his book ‘The Thyroid Solution’, says that people with thyroid problems should make sure they get enough vitamins, either by eating plenty of the foods containing these vitamins or by supplements. Many people now lead very busy lives and donít have time to eat properly. Many woman miss meals altogether to lose weight without realising that this can cause problems for your thyroid. Even if you try and eat properly, by the time we purchase, prepare and cook everyday foods, most of the nutrients have disappeared and we believe supplements are essential to maintain a good thyroid.

This is why I recommend a HIGH QUALITY vitamin alongside a high quality Prebiotic and Probiotic – because gut health is paramount to thyroid and indeed all hormone health.

Essential Oils can also provide support.  This is nothing new, Our ancestors have used plants, seeds, wood, and resins from nature for thousands of years to support the body.

However, not all essential oils are created equally.  You must find a pure certified therapeutic grade brand as other brands may contain synthetics of no therapeutic benefit.

People have reported by using these essential oils you can support symptoms of low thyroid:  (you can read some testimonials HERE

1.  Myrrh

Studies showed Myrrh improved all thyroid functions in mice, including improved conversion of T4 to T3 and increased uptake of iodine. Like many other essential oils mentioned, myrrh reduces inflammation and has antioxidant activities. Frankincense and myrrh block inflammation in a potent way. Myrrh prevented low thyroid levels in female mice by reducing markers of inflammation in the body

2.  Lemongrass

There are numerous ways in which lemongrass can benefit health, with regards to thyroid and autoimmune thyroid conditions, lemongrass is especially useful for its anti-inflammatory and antifungal effects.  One study showed that lemongrass oil inhibited the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL1 beta and IL-6.

3.  Lavender

Many people with thyroid and autoimmune thyroid conditions have s

leep issues, and so lavender oil might help in some of these cases.  Lavender also has anti-inflammatory effects, as a study showed that lavender essential oil inhibited inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharides.  Another study showed that lavender has antioxidant, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effects.

4.  Clove

Clove oil is a powerful antioxidant, low thyroid levels are often caused by having too few antioxidants in the body.  Antioxidants can also slow the aging process and prevent free radical damage! It has anti-viral properties that can boost the immune system.

5.  Peppermint

Peppermint is stimuating and invigorating meaning it can help with chronic fatigue and oor concentration.  Its a great all rounder oil to have on hand as it also helps with respiratory, digestive and muscle aches.

I recommend blending 3-5 of these oils together with fractionated coconut oil in a 10ml roller bottle – a couple of drops of each to begin with, then raise it if needed.

Apply 3-4 times daily directly on your thyroid, back of neck and on the balls of your feet (where the thyroid helper reflexology points are)

Supplement your life!

I believe proper supplementation is SO important because we just don’t get the proper nutrients from our food these days.
